How did you experience the book? Were you engaged immediately, or did it take you a while to "get into it"?
When I read the book it took me a while to get into it, at the beginning it seemed like the typical success and love story. " like a man comes back from a long trip, marries the girl of his childhood and gets a great job" but once jealousy comes into effect and this perfect story turns into the greatest upset. He loses his wealth his love and his friends because of the corruption of the justice system. Once Dantes turns his character into this revengeful and knowledgeable character the story become more interesting. He uses his mystery and wealth to slowly secure his own life into the live of his enemies. This really engaged me into the book, it really intrigued me to see how he was going to seek revenge of his enemies and destroy their entire lives. He uses his mystery to get his enemies to be interested in him, he wants them to research him, find out what he's all about but once they find out there is nothing on him, it creates more mystery and the need for his enemies to become apart of his life allowing him to get into their lives. As you read and see the Counts mystery it makes you want to find out more about him and it makes you apart of the plan to destroy his enemies. It makes you wonder about his techniques and plan to get revenge.

What specific themes did the author emphasize throughout the novel?
In the Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas expresses the theme of human justice. Edmond Dantes has to take his own justice into his own hands because his societies justice system fails him when it is corrupted with jealousy. It allows his enemies to commit crime against him and slide through the cracks, resulting in his own imprisonment. He has to take it into his own hands because he knows that the people that are against him are above the law. Considering himself an agent of Providence, Dantes aims to carry out divine justice where he feels human justice has failed him. He sets out to punish his enemies as he believes they should be punished, by destroying all that is dear to them, just as they have done to him. He destroys the love in their lives including family and friends. He takes away their wealth which includes all their sources to money and all their assets. He shuts down their lives from the inside, you they have nothing to look on for help, he makes sure that they suffer the same way he did. Dumas’s final message in this epic work of crime and punishment is that human beings must simply resign themselves to allowing God to reward and punish, when and how God sees fit. As well as if people try or do take justice into their own hands is that even if all you can see is the positive and the gain for yourself their is always something that will hurt you.

What was unique about the setting of the book and how did it enhance or take away from the story?
The setting played a large part in the novel and enhanced the characters along with the story line. Edmond Dantes creates many identities for himself and as these are created the settings in the novel change. While he is in his true form of Edmond he is living in a setting of poverty but wealth at the same time, he has true love with his soon to be wife, a new job as captain and a wonderful father to support him, he is imprisoned by the jealously of others and influences his next character, the count of Monte Cristo. He creates the count after a priest in jail tells him the location of a great treasure. With his new found wealth, the setting changes, he is now the most wealthy man but is lacking the love and support that he had as Edmond. His wife married his best friend and his father killed himself so after his imprisonment. He creates a setting of knowledge, wealth and revenge, so he can get close to the people that have ruined his past life and love. With this new found wealth he also creates another identity and the setting change according to it. Lord Wilmore is created by Edmond, this identity still has the setting of wealth and knowledge but instead of revenge, the setting has generosity. He also creates the identity of Abbe Busoni, a priest, he uses this character to gain the trust of his enemies and get into their lives so he can destroy them from the inside.
